The interactive demo allows to sample the campaign for a while. However, once you get a grip of the controls, it may be fun and challenging to play. You can play The Horde on this website so you dont need to download and install the game on your computer. The game is controlled with the mouse, and in a somewhat clumsy and counterintuitive way (apparently, The Horde came out first on the 3DO console, and the controls were adapted to the limited buttons on a game pad). Safeguarding the village buildings and crops is vital to further development, as everything costs money, which is in short supply. The second phase is the Hordlings' attack, which the player (as Chauncey) has to deal with alone using his mighty sword, but later on, other warriors can be hired to help defending the village. During the first phase, the player builds up the village and its defences.

The game time is split into seasons, with each comprising two phases. We might have the game available for more. Taking on the role of Chauncey the Brave, an unlikely hero of the realm, it is the player's task to develop his lands while defending them, mostly single-handedly, from the insatiable Hordlings. The Horde is a Strategy game developed by Toys for Bob and published by Crystal Dynamics in 1994. Zany humor and many hidden surprises round off one of the best action underdogs ever. The Horde is an action/strategy hybrid game in a mediaeval fantasy setting. The control is where the game falters a bit: it's clumsy, and sometimes confusing in a game where you can't afford such time wasters.īut overall, The Horde is a fun, addictive underrated gem. The character, enemies, and effects are well done, and the cinematic cutscenes are splendid. Nice landscapes will take you from desert, to swamp, to arctic land. Game graphics are excellent for the era (although many people will have trouble running the game on new 3D cards). Simply putting up fences around your village isn't going to cut it, as the horde monsters are not as dumb as they look.

You don't get much time to prepare for the next horde invasion, so quick thinking is also necessary. You must help your village grow (which requires money), while balancing the costs of defending it and paying taxes. Success in the game requires that you plan ahead, as the number of houses, farms, and other structures in your fiefdom continue and grow from mission to mission. What makes The Horde different from - and superior to- most other action games is the excellent blend of strategy and action. The second phase is when you get to whack the Horde monsters and snicker as they fall into your traps.

In the strategic phase at the start of each mission, you must develop your fiefdom by building houses, farms, etc, within time limit. One of few action games that offer an excellent mix of action and strategic elements, The Horde casts you in the role of Chauncey, a lowly serving boy who became a knight after saving the king's life from asphyxiation.
